Data-Only eSIMs: Calls, SMS, WhatsApp and Your Number

Updated August 20, 2026 · 5 minute read

A data-only eSIM provides internet access but does not include a new mobile number, traditional voice minutes or outgoing SMS.

What still works?

WhatsApp, FaceTime, iMessage, Signal, Telegram, email, maps and browser calling services use internet data and work normally. Apps tied to your existing number usually keep that identity when you change the data line.

Can I receive bank SMS codes?

Keep your primary SIM enabled for calls and SMS. Receiving messages abroad depends on your home carrier and roaming settings. To avoid unexpected data charges, select Tavi for Cellular Data and disable cellular data switching.

Will WhatsApp change my number?

No. WhatsApp normally stays registered to the number already attached to the account. Decline any prompt to change it unless you intentionally want a new identity.

Recommended setup: primary SIM for default voice and SMS; Tavi for cellular data; Data Roaming on for Tavi and off for the primary line.

Why choose data only?

Most travellers already communicate through internet apps. A data-only product is simpler, avoids managing a temporary number, and lets the regular SIM remain reachable.
