How Much Travel Data Do You Need? 3GB vs 10GB vs 20GB
Updated August 20, 2026 · 5 minute read
The right plan depends more on video and hotspot use than trip length. Maps and messaging are light; streaming and laptop tethering can consume gigabytes quickly.
3GB: light use or a short trip
Suitable for messaging, occasional maps, ride-hailing, email and light browsing. Download offline maps and hotel media on Wi-Fi to stretch it.
10GB: the balanced choice
A good fit for one to three weeks of daily navigation, social media, photo uploads and occasional short video. It gives useful headroom without paying for heavy-use capacity.
20GB: work, video or hotspot use
Choose more data if you will stream regularly, upload large files, join video meetings, or share the connection with a laptop.
Practical estimates
- Messaging without video: usually tens of MB per day.
- Maps navigation: often modest, especially with offline areas downloaded.
- Music streaming: roughly 40–150MB per hour depending on quality.
- Video: commonly 0.5–3GB per hour depending on resolution.
- Video meetings: often 0.5–2GB per hour.
