What Is an eSIM? A Practical Travel Guide
Updated August 20, 2026 · 5 minute read
An eSIM is a digital version of the SIM card already built into many modern phones. Instead of inserting plastic, you install a carrier profile using a QR code or activation details.
What changes when you use an eSIM?
Your phone can hold several mobile plans at once. A travel eSIM can handle cellular data abroad while your usual SIM remains available for calls, SMS and your familiar phone number.
How an eSIM is installed
- Purchase a plan for your destination.
- Open the QR code on another screen or choose manual installation.
- On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.
- Label the new line Tavi or Travel.
- When you arrive, select it for Cellular Data and enable Data Roaming on that line.
What you need before buying
Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS and newer support eSIM in most markets; availability on Android varies by model and country. Search Settings for “Add eSIM” and confirm unlock status with your home carrier.
When does a travel plan activate?
Most Tavi plans begin their validity when they first connect to a supported destination network. You can therefore install before departure while you still have dependable Wi-Fi.
