What Is an eSIM? A Practical Travel Guide

Updated August 20, 2026 · 5 minute read

An eSIM is a digital version of the SIM card already built into many modern phones. Instead of inserting plastic, you install a carrier profile using a QR code or activation details.

What changes when you use an eSIM?

Your phone can hold several mobile plans at once. A travel eSIM can handle cellular data abroad while your usual SIM remains available for calls, SMS and your familiar phone number.

Tavi plans are data only. WhatsApp, FaceTime, maps, email and other internet services work through the data connection. Traditional calls and SMS stay on your primary carrier.

How an eSIM is installed

  1. Purchase a plan for your destination.
  2. Open the QR code on another screen or choose manual installation.
  3. On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM.
  4. Label the new line Tavi or Travel.
  5. When you arrive, select it for Cellular Data and enable Data Roaming on that line.

What you need before buying

Your phone must support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS and newer support eSIM in most markets; availability on Android varies by model and country. Search Settings for “Add eSIM” and confirm unlock status with your home carrier.

When does a travel plan activate?

Most Tavi plans begin their validity when they first connect to a supported destination network. You can therefore install before departure while you still have dependable Wi-Fi.
